LAKHIMPUR: The members of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Thursday initiated protest programme Lakhimpur district against the State Government’s decision to teach Mathematics and Science in English in vernacular medium schools from Class 6 onwards.

In this connection, the Lakhimpur district unit of the organization initiated three-hour long sit-in in North Lakhimpur town. Leading the protest programme, Lakhimpur AASU president Simanta Neog and general secretary Swaraj Sankar Gogoi slammed the Government of Assam for taking the decision which is allegedly destructive to the Assamese language and the mother languages of the indigenous communities of Assam. They reiterated that the decision of the government to teach Mathematics and Science in English from Class 6 is detrimental to the growth of Assamese, Bodo and other local languages. They added that AASU would never accept this decision. They demanded the Government of Assam to withdraw the decision at the earliest coming out of arrogant and obstinate stand regarding the issue.

On the other hand, around 400 members of the Dhemaji district unit of AASU rocked Dhemaji town by initiating a protest rally regarding the same demand. The rally was taken out from Swahid Bedi premises covering the Dhemaji town and ended at the same place. During the procession, the protesters, by shouting various slogans, slammed the BJP-led Government of the State, Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu for taking the ‘destructive decision’ to destroy the Assamese and other vernacular languages of Assam. They demanded to scrap the decision at the earliest.

After the rally, Dhemaji AASU held a protest meeting wherein advisers Dipak Sarmah, Kalyan Gogoi, general secretary Jayanta Borgohain, president Sanjib Das, central committee information secretary Manturaj Baruah delivered lecture. Dhemaji AASU warned the Government of Assam not to hit upon the Assamese and other indigenous languages of Assam and to take back the distributed textbooks of Mathematics and Science subjects in the English language and to distribute the same in the vernacular languages. Dhemaji AASU also demanded the government to take adequate steps to teach the English language properly in vernacular medium schools.
